Gingivitis is among the most common dental issues.
It's treatable through irrigation, scaling and planing, and maintenance.

Healthy gums are the foundation of a beautiful smile. Our advanced care keeps yours in peak condition.

Gingivitis and its more serious form periodontitis are the most common conditions related to the inflammation of the gums, resulting from the buildup of bacteria over time (plaque) on the teeth. Infrequent or inadequate brushing and flossing permits the plaque to spread and become a more significant issue, leading to red and swollen gums, bleeding gums (particularly during brushing), chronic halitosis (bad breath), and other symptoms.

Gingival Irrigation:
One of the most frequently used treatments for periodontitis and gingivitis is gingival irrigation, which through a stream of water and an antiseptic solution aims to knock out the bacteria, plaque, and food debris that cause the conditions. One of our dental professionals first numbs the treatment area with local anesthetic, and then a small tube is inserted into the gum pockets, which flushes the water or solution into the gaps. This treatment effectively reduces the swelling and bleeding, stops the progress of the disease, improves overall hygiene, and freshens breath. The irrigation can be completed in just one visit.

Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning):
The more severe cases of periodontitis and gingivitis call for a more intensive treatment. Enter scaling and root planing, which is nothing more than a deep cleaning, and this procedure is split into two parts. Scaling involves the removal of all plaque and tartar above and below the gumline using special tooth scraping instruments. Planing refers to the smoothing out of the teeth (also using specialized dental equipment) that allows for gum reattachment. Depending on the severity of the case, this treatment may require multiple visits to complete, would be repeated once or twice yearly, and can also involve a local anesthetic.

Periodontal Maintenance:
In the very extreme instances of periodontitis or gingivitis, we recommend a comprehensive treatment plan involving a visit once every three or four months. With a combination of improvement in home care (brushing and flossing), in addition to regular scaling and root planing, we can help to alleviate your condition and improve your smile. Together we can make a difference, but it will take a commitment on your part, and a dedication to better tooth outcomes. A consultation with our dental hygienist is a good step in the right direction, as are regular follow up visits.
